SW2NAV · SOLIDWORKS add-in

SOLIDWORKS to Dynamics 365 Business Central Integration

Open the assembly, choose the all-levels send on the ERP Integrator tab, and Business Central gets the items, the production BOMs, a certified version A and every line, taken from the custom properties in the model.

SOLIDWORKS and Business Central

The BOM is already in the model. SW2NAV puts it in the ERP.

An engineer finishing an assembly in SOLIDWORKS has already defined every part number, description and quantity. Someone in the office then retypes the same data into Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, or Dynamics NAV, as items and a production BOM, and does it again at every change.

SW2NAV is the SOLIDWORKS edition of ERP Integrator for desktop applications. It adds an ERP Integrator tab to the ribbon and task panes next to the model, reads the custom properties of the open assembly and everything below it, and brings Business Central up to date. SOLIDWORKS PDM is not required; with PDM, the same integration also works from the vault.

  • From the open assembly

Custom properties and the assembly structure become items and production BOMs.

  • Resends touch only changes

Items that are already current are skipped.

  • Business Central in a task pane

Item, BOM and a line-by-line comparison, read live.

  • Rules typed in words

The AI chat writes the macro and previews it; you decide what is sent.

How it works

What SW2NAV does with an open assembly

Sending data to ERP dialog in SOLIDWORKS listing engine_assy2, PISTON-ASSY and their parts with the result of each step

Send

One send from the ERP Integrator tab

With the assembly open, choose the all-levels send on the ERP Integrator tab of the ribbon. The add-in reads the custom properties of the assembly and of every part and sub-assembly below it, runs them through your rules and writes the result to Business Central.

  • Items, production BOMs, the production BOM version and every BOM line in one pass.
  • One row per item in the dialog, with a column for item, production BOM, BOM version and BOM lines.
  • Items that are already current show as skipped, so a resend only touches what changed.
  • Close the dialog when it reads Process completed, or leave it running in the background.

Result in Business Central

Production BOM version A, certified

The items carry the descriptions from the SOLIDWORKS custom properties. The production BOM version is created as version A with status Certified, listing each component with its quantity per and unit of measure.

  • The piston assembly gets its own production BOM and appears as a line on the engine assembly.
  • Quantities come from the assembly structure, not from a typed list.
  • Which custom property fills which Business Central field, and fixed values such as the material, are set once in the mapping.

Files

The model preview as the item picture

The SOLIDWORKS preview of each part and assembly is uploaded as the picture of the Business Central item. Switch the item list to tiles and purchasing and planning see the part they are about to order.

Additional actions

A routing from the Additional actions menu

The Additional actions menu on the ERP Integrator tab lists the extra steps your settings define. Create routing opens a dialog with the routing header and its operation, taken from the open assembly, and creates both in Business Central.

  • In the example: operation 10 on work center 100 with a setup time of 15 minutes.
  • Other additional actions are configured the same way, as a header step and a lines step.

Check in SOLIDWORKS

The Business Central item next to the model

The ERP Item Details pane reads the item live from Business Central for the document that is open, so you know whether a part already exists in the ERP and what it holds there before you send anything.

  • Pick the item properties the pane shows.
  • The layout is saved for the next document.

Check in SOLIDWORKS

The ERP BOM, current or from an earlier date

The ERP BOM Details pane shows the production BOM as Business Central has it. Filter by status, date effectivity and configuration; with version management active in Business Central, earlier BOM versions can be listed as well as the current one.

  • Add or remove BOM columns with Add BOM Column and Delete BOM Column.
  • Save Settings keeps the column choice for later sessions.

Compare

SOLIDWORKS and Business Central, line by line

The ERP Data pane lists the assembly line by line, down into the piston assembly, with the SOLIDWORKS value next to the Business Central value. A green check means the two agree; a red mark shows what changed in SOLIDWORKS since the last send.

  • Covers item fields of the first-level children, the production BOM header and the BOM lines.
  • Can be compared against earlier ERP BOM versions when needed.
PDM2ERP Reporter with a bar chart of items created per month and tabs for production BOMs, BOM lines, BOM versions, the log viewer and the process list

Traceability

Reports, logs and the process list

The PDM2ERP Reporter counts what was sent to Business Central: items created or updated in a period, grouped by month or day, and per user.

  • Transaction and activity reports export to Excel.
  • The log viewer keeps the history of each run for error analysis.
  • The process list shows the details of past transfers.

Rules and AI

A purchase-or-produce rule, typed into the chat

Company rules live in a macro that runs before anything is sent. Instead of writing it yourself, type the rule into the AI chat: parts with screw, ring or pin in the description are bought, everything else is made on a production order.

  • The AI reads the SOLIDWORKS description and the Business Central Replenishment System field with its allowed values.
  • It writes the rule into the macro, compiles it and shows Preview Data for the real assembly: the cap screw becomes Purchase, and so does the conrod bearing, because bearing contains ring.
  • Nothing is saved or sent until you say so, which is when such a side effect gets caught.
AI chat answer in SOLIDWORKS comparing component quantities between SOLIDWORKS and Business Central

Questions and search

Ask Business Central from inside SOLIDWORKS

Ask whether the component quantities of the assembly match Business Central: the chat reads the BOM from SOLIDWORKS and the live production BOM lines, and answers with a table, here all eight components matching. Ask which parts already exist in Business Central and how they are bought today, and it looks them up.

  • Your own API key for Claude, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI or any compatible model.
  • A ChatGPT sign-in, or a coding agent such as Claude or Gemini.
  • Or your own assistant, connected through the MCP connector. Nothing it proposes reaches the mapping, the macro or Business Central without your approval.

FAQ

Questions about SW2NAV

Do we need SOLIDWORKS PDM to send data to Business Central?

No. SW2NAV runs in SOLIDWORKS itself and reads the custom properties of the open assembly and its components, wherever the files are stored. Companies that do use SOLIDWORKS PDM can send from the vault instead, with PDM2NAV.

Which Business Central records are created from a SOLIDWORKS assembly?

The all-levels send creates or updates an item for every part and sub-assembly, a production BOM for each assembly, production BOM version A with status Certified, and the BOM lines with quantity per and unit of measure. Sub-assemblies get their own production BOM and appear as a line on the parent. The SOLIDWORKS preview is uploaded as the item picture.

What happens when I send the same assembly again after a change?

Items that are already current are skipped, and only what changed is updated. The send dialog shows the result per item and per step, so you see which records were touched.

How do I check what Business Central has without leaving SOLIDWORKS?

Three task panes read Business Central live: ERP Item Details for the selected item, ERP BOM Details for the production BOM including older versions, and ERP Data, which lists the assembly line by line with the SOLIDWORKS value next to the Business Central value and a green check or red mark on each.

Can the AI chat change Business Central on its own?

No. The chat writes rules into the macro and shows the result in Preview Data first; nothing is saved or sent until you say so. It works with your own key for Claude, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI or a compatible model, a ChatGPT sign-in, a coding agent such as Claude or Gemini, or your own assistant through the MCP connector.

Does it support Dynamics NAV and other ERPs?

SW2NAV sends to Business Central and to Dynamics NAV. The same add-in, ERP Integrator for desktop applications, also connects SOLIDWORKS to Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business One and Odoo; the ERP is chosen when you install it.
